How tall are D3 basketball players? Average height by position and conference
A Division III basketball player averages 6'3" (74.9") on 2025–26 rosters — guards 6'1", forwards 6'5", centers 6'8" — from 7,042 rostered players at 403 programs. The middle half of D3 guards stand 6'0" to 6'3". The tallest D3 conference is the University Athletic Association at 6'4" (76.4"), the shortest the North Atlantic Conference at 6'2" (73.9"). At the same position, a D1 player stands about 2.7 inches taller.

Position sets the number: D3 guards average 6'1", forwards 6'5", centers 6'8".
The overall D3 average of 6'3" (74.9") mixes the three. Compare yourself with your own position's middle half — guards 6'0" to 6'3", forwards 6'4" to 6'7", centers 6'6" to 6'9" — not with the headline.
37% of D3 players are 6'3"–6'5", the most common band.
12% of D3 players are listed under 6'0" and 20% at 6'6" or taller; 31% are 6'0"–6'2" and 37% are 6'3"–6'5". The full spread is in the bands table.
D3 conferences differ by 2.5 inches end to end.
University Athletic Association is the tallest of the 43 D3 conferences with enough listed heights to show, at 6'4" (76.4"); North Atlantic Conference the shortest at 6'2" (73.9"). That is less than the 2.7-inch same-position gap between D3 and D1 — which level you play matters more for height than which D3 conference.

Why the D3 number is the one most recruits should know
Division III has 403 programs and 7,094 rostered players in 2025–26 — more roster spots than any other level. For most high-school players the realistic question is not "am I tall enough for D1?" but "where do I sit among the players who actually make D3 rosters?" — and the answer is a range: the middle half of all D3 players stand 6'1" to 6'5".
The level gap is real but it is inches, not feet: at the same position a D1 player stands about 2.7 inches taller than a D3 player (guards 6'1" against 6'3"; forwards 6'5" against 6'8"; centers 6'8" against 6'11"). Height alone rarely decides the level; it sets the range you are compared inside.
What a conference average can and cannot tell you
The 43 D3 conferences with enough listed heights to show run from 6'2" (73.9") (the North Atlantic Conference) to 6'4" (76.4") (the University Athletic Association). A conference average is a description of who is already there, not a bar for entry — a program recruits by position and role, and the guard column is the one to compare against.
Which D3 programs actually recruit players like you is the question this table cannot answer — that depends on your position, production and market, which is what the Recruiting Fit Report scores program by program.
How to read this for your own case
How to read itStart from your position's middle half, not the D3 average.
A 6'3" guard and a 6'3" center are different cases at D3: the guard sits at the top of the guards' middle half, the center below the centers' middle half. The by-position table is the one to read.
A D3 conference can add or take an inch, not a level.
The 2.5-inch spread between the tallest and shortest D3 conferences is smaller than the 2.7-inch same-position gap to D1. Within D3, target the conferences whose guard average matches you; do not expect a conference to change what D3 looks like.
D3 is the biggest level, so its range is the widest.
12% of D3 players are listed under 6'0" and 20% at 6'6" or taller. 403 programs carry 7,094 rostered players; a wide range of heights makes a D3 roster, and yours is likely inside it.

Definitions and scope
- Source
- Official 2025–26 rosters published by the athletics sites of NCAA Division III men's programs, collected by Depth Chart, with the D1 and D2 rosters from the same collection for the comparison line.
- Sample
- 7,042 D3 player-seasons with a listed height between 5'0" and 7'6", of 7,094 D3 roster lines seen. A position, band or conference with fewer than 30 listed heights is not shown.
- Positions
- Roster position normalised to guard, forward or center; combined listings (G/F) count under their first position.
- Heights
- As listed by the school, rounded to the inch in the tables; the averages carry one decimal. Listed heights run generous by an inch or so across the sport; comparisons between groups are unaffected.
- Conferences
- A school mid-realignment counts in the conference it plays in this season — announced future moves are ignored until they happen. 43 D3 conferences clear the floor; the tables show the tallest and shortest 10.
- Roster spots
- Every player listed on a 2025–26 D3 roster, and every D3 program with at least one. A program's roster page may be partial early in a season.
