The membership year
The AAU membership year runs from September 1 to August 31. Your child must hold a current membership to participate in any AAU licensed event.
What the AAU charges for a youth athlete
A regular youth athlete membership costs $22.00. The AAU also offers an extended coverage membership for $24.00. The sources describe the extended coverage option as allowing members to participate in non-AAU licensed events under certain circumstances, but the sources do not detail what those circumstances are on the pages reviewed.
What the AAU charges for basketball specifically among adult athletes
Basketball falls in the group that costs $30.00 for a regular adult athlete membership and $34.00 for extended coverage. Adult athlete memberships are sport-specific, meaning they cover one sport only.
What the AAU charges for coaches and other non-athletes
A coach, administrator, bench personnel, instructor, manager, official, team leader, tournament director, or volunteer must purchase a non-athlete membership. The one-year regular rate is $55.00. One-year extended benefit is $57.00. A two-year regular membership costs $75.00, and a two-year extended benefit membership costs $79.00. These rates apply whether the person works with youth ages 1 to 20 or adults ages 21 to 99. An international (non-US) non-athlete membership is $55.00; the sources say extended coverage is not available for that option.
What these fees do not cover
These are the AAU's own membership fees. They do not include what a club or team charges to join, travel costs, uniforms, tournament entry fees, or any other expenses. The sources reviewed do not publish figures for those items.

AAU clubs set their own tryout schedules and roster sizes — the AAU's published rules govern age and grade eligibility, membership requirements, and coach background checks, but the AAU does not publish a standard tryout process that clubs must follow.
