The AAU season year
AAU boys' basketball runs on a September-to-August calendar. The 2027 season, for example, covers September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027. Your child's eligibility — age cutoffs, grade rules, and state residency — is all calculated within that window.
When does the season actually get going?
The sources do not publish a single national start date for local or district play. Individual clubs and districts set their own first-event dates. AAU's website lists named events — such as the Easter Classic and the Memorial Day Classic — but the sources do not give specific dates for those events. Check directly with your child's club or your district's sport director for the earliest games in your area.
When is the biggest event of the year?
The AAU Boys' Basketball World Championship is held in early July. For 2027, the older divisions (14U/8th grade through 19U/12th grade) are scheduled for July 1–4 at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL. The younger divisions (7U/1st grade through 13U/7th grade) are scheduled for July 5–8 at the same location. A Division 3 event is planned at Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, VA, but dates for that event are listed as TBD in the source.
What the sources do not say
The sources do not publish a national tryout window, a date when clubs must register, or a date when district tournaments begin. Those details vary by region. AAU lists District Sport Directors as a contact resource for local questions.

What do official visit, verbal commitment, transfer portal, and other recruiting terms actually mean?
The NCAA defines each of these terms precisely, and knowing the definitions protects your child from costly mistakes — a verbal commitment is not binding, a dead period means no recruiting contact at all, and a Division III pre-read question is not answered by NCAA sources. - Data study

When can my child contact college coaches, and what can coaches do in reply?
Your child may call college coaches at any time starting in ninth grade, but what a coach may send or say back depends entirely on the division and your child's grade level — and the NCAA's Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete warns that Division I coaches may not be permitted to reply at all during certain grade levels.
