How tall are college basketball players? Average height by position and division
D1 guards average 6'3", forwards 6'8", centers 6'11". Each level down is about an inch shorter at every position — a D3 guard averages 6'1", a D3 forward 6'6". The middle half of every group sits within about two inches of its average.

Position matters more than division.
The gap between a guard and a center at the same level (8 inches at D1) dwarfs the gap between D1 and D3 at the same position (2 inches for guards).
Each level is about an inch shorter.
D1 → D2 → D3, at every position, within an inch either way.
Averages hide a wide middle.
Half of all D1 guards stand between 6'2" and 6'5"; half of D3 guards between 5'11" and 6'3". Being an inch under the average is ordinary, not disqualifying.

What this means if you're being recruited
Height is the first thing a coach sees and the last thing you can change, so families ask about it first. The honest reading of this table: at every level, half the roster sits within about two inches of the average for their position. A 6'1" guard is at the D3 average and an inch under D2's — and a quarter of D1 guards are 6'2" or under. Height sets the range of positions you're evaluated for; it does not, on its own, set your level.

D1 guards average 190 lb, forwards 220 lb and centers 242 lb — and the spread inside each group is wider than the gap between divisions. Computed from 11,080 player-seasons on 2025–26 rosters.
