How do you sign your child up for AAU basketball?
Your child needs an individual AAU membership to compete in any AAU event, and you buy that membership directly through the AAU website.

Your child needs a membership — not a team signup
AAU membership is required before your child can participate in any AAU licensed event. Buying a membership does not put your child on a team. According to the AAU FAQ, the AAU does not assign athletes to clubs or teams — clubs form independently and join the AAU to enter licensed events.
What it costs
The AAU lists two pricing tiers for individual athlete memberships. Youth athlete fees run $22.00 or $24.00 per year. Adult athlete fees run $30.00 to $35.00 per year. The membership year runs from September 1 to August 31. The sources do not explain what determines which price within each range applies to a given registration.
How to register
Go to aausports.org, click the Membership tab, and choose the athlete option. You will need basic information about your child. If a coach has already told you to register, the coach may give you a club code to enter during signup — that code links your child's membership to the team. If you do not have a club code yet, the AAU site has a 'Find a Club' tool to locate clubs in your area.
If you need to fix a membership
The AAU FAQ says you cannot upgrade a membership type online. To switch from a regular membership to extended coverage, you must call the AAU national office at 407-934-7200. To add a club code after the fact, visit the membership lookup on the AAU site and enter your child's first name, last name, zip code, and birth date to find and edit the record.
What the sources do not cover
The sources do not say what tryout process clubs use, what it costs to play on a specific team beyond the AAU membership fee, or how to evaluate which club is the right fit for your child.
