Where 6'0"–6'2" guards actually land: D1, D2 or D3, by the numbers

Of guards between 6'0" and 6'2" who made a college roster, 25% played D1, 27% D2 and 48% D3. Three inches changes the picture: at 6'3"–6'5" the D1 share is 37%, and at 6'6"–6'8" it is 58%.

Three inches is the whole story.

At 5'9"–5'11", 58% of rostered guards are D3. At 6'6"–6'8", 58% are D1. Every inch of height moves the distribution one way.

6'0"–6'2" is the height families ask about most — and it leans D3.

8,176 of 21,865 rostered guards sit in this band, behind 8,268 at 6'3"–6'5". Nearly half of them (48%) play D3, and just over a quarter (25%) play D1.

30% of all D1 guards stand at 6'0"–6'2".

That is 2,029 of 6,712 rostered D1 guards — every one of them, including the 170 who stand outside the bands in the table below. The D1 share is not zero at any band above 5'9". Height sets the odds; it does not close the door.

How to read this if you're a 6'1" guard

The honest sentence: among guards your height who made a roster, D3 is the most common outcome (48%), D2 and D1 are each roughly a quarter. That is the field you're competing in — not a verdict on you.

What separates the quarter who play D1 from the rest is not height. It is production against strong schedules, a role a coach can name, and the programs recruiting your position — which is what the Recruiting Fit Report scores, program by program.

Definitions and scope
Source
Official rosters published by the athletics sites of 1,060 NCAA D1, D2 and D3 men's programs, five seasons, collected by Depth Chart.
Sample
21,865 distinct rostered guards with a listed height, each counted once at the division of their most recent season in the window. The bands cover 5'9" to 6'8"; 837 guards outside that range count toward the total but appear in no band. A band with fewer than 30 guards would not be shown.
Guards
Roster position normalised; combined listings (G/F) count under their first position.
